How do I install pwn (pwntools) for Python3 on Centos?

Post by MDofPerth » 2019/12/24 03:03:28

I am doing some Capture The Flag (CTF) stuff and can see that a lot of the challenges are best tackled by using pwntools. These apparently install easily on Ubuntu, but installation guides for pwntools tell installers to use apt-get and then pip3. Is there a recommended way to install pwn (python3-pwntools) on Centos?
I guess a simpler question is: is it okay to use apt-get on Centos, if so, with what caveats?

No. apt* are Debian/Ubuntu tools for their package manager. On CentOS we do not use that package manager, it's yum or dnf (apt* equivalents) or rpm (dpkg replacement).
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.

You could use pip to install pwntools

Code: Select all

yum install python3-pip
I keep updated python packages outside of yum so I update as user

Code: Select all

pip3 list -o
will show outdated python packages, to update as user

Code: Select all

pip3 install --upgrade pip --user
this should update pip3 to 3.6

Code: Select all

pip3.6 search pwntools
gives me

Code: Select all

pwntools (3.13.0) - Pwntools CTF framework and exploit development library.
You can install as user

Code: Select all

pip3.6 install --user pwntools
