Re: Emergency mode after reboot stuck on "Failed to start switch root"
Try booting the rescue kernel and if that fails then you will need to boot from alternative media like the install DVD in rescue mode (an option off the initial menu's Troubleshooting option).
It's complaining that /etc/os-release does not exist. Check in your root filesystem's /etc/for that file and see if it exists and is valid.
Or perhaps your disk is not being seen at all - for example, maybe your CMOS battery ran out and your BIOS forgot all its settings so the disk is now using different settings e.g. RAID instead of AHCI and is not being seen properly?

The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

Each machine has its own way to enter the BIOS settings though most use either Del or F2 during POST.

Re: Emergency mode after reboot stuck on "Failed to start switch root"
Do you have a separate hardware RAID card? If so then it may have its own setup but if you do then it makes it less likely to be a settings change as it should also have its own battery.

Re: Emergency mode after reboot stuck on "Failed to start switch root"
Yes, the server has its own raid card, I will try to boot a usb DVD with centos ( as rescue didn't boot ) and try troubleshooting options.
Re: Emergency mode after reboot stuck on "Failed to start switch root"
I've mounted a USB with centos 7 iso and tried to boot rescue but stuck here
Re: Emergency mode after reboot stuck on "Failed to start switch root"
How did you create the USB stick? Did you check the sha256sum of whatever iso file you downloaded against the list in the relevant version of the CentOS release notes? See https://wiki.centos.org/HowTos/InstallFromUSBkey for a list of broken utilities that should not be used.
