Set up Postgresql-93 on Centos 7

Post by nfrancisco » 2014/08/05 15:58:46

I followed this Almost idiot's guide to install postgresql and postgis on Centos 7 and got stuck starting the database itself with the following command:

Code: Select all

[root@localhost cmaps]# service postgresql-9.3 initdb
The service command supports only basic LSB actions (start, stop, restart, try-restart, reload, force-reload, status). For other actions, please try to use systemctl.
If I install the postgresql package from Centos repository (version 9.2) the command works, but then I they don't have postgis, and there is no official posgresql-92 repository for Centos 7.

Any idea on what's happening?

Thank you!

C6 rpms will not work on C7.
C7 does not support any unofficial service options.
You can do start, stop, restart, reload, try-restart, reload-or-restart, reload-or-try, or status.

CentOS 7 ships with postgresql 9.2 and no postgis yet. I checked on el6 and postgis is available there from EPEL but it's not yet in EPEL7. You might want to raise a bugzilla on bugzilla.redhat.com under Fedora EPEL, product postgis and ask for it to be made available for el7. Might also be worth searching first to see how many others have already asked!

postgis2_93 is now available on pgdg93.. It was a show stopper for my server upgrades until released.

Dear all

I have enabled PostgreSQL 9.3 on Centos 7 64-bit. Pls see below:

[root@andromeda ~]# systemctl list-unit-files | grep post
postfix.service enabled
postgresql-9.3.service enabled
[root@andromeda ~]#

However, I can't connect to psql:

[xxx@andromeda ~]$ psql
psql: could not connect to server: No such file or directory
Is the server running locally and accepting
connections on Unix domain socket "/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5432"?
[xxx@andromeda ~]$

Kindly let me know what is going wrong. I have installed POstgreSQL from Centos repositories.

Either you are mistaken about the release installed or you didn't get it from the CentOS repos. CentOS 7 sips with postgresql-server-9.2.7 not 9.3. If you really have 9.3 then you are probably best off asking in the support venue for wherever you got your copy from.

Correction : I did not install POstgres from Centos repos.

I installed it from POstgresql itself after following the intructions in ths link:
http://people.planetpostgresql.org/devr ... HEL-7.html

I am not able to connect to psql as postgres, as I have forgotten the password:
psql: FATAL: password authentication failed for user "postgres"

I will post updates in case I make any progress.

You can just install the repo from here:
http://yum.postgresql.org//9.3/redhat/rhel-7-x86_64/

Code: Select all

yum -y http://yum.postgresql.org/9.3/redhat/rhel-7-x86_64/pgdg-centos93-9.3-1.noarch.rpm
Then you can install everything as you did before.
Tested and works fine with me
