Grub boot failure - install Centos 7.9

Post by chlowden007 » 2022/05/04 17:59:11

Hello
I am struggling to boot following an install of install Centos 7.9 onto a Dell 7530. BIOS is up to date and the machine was working on Centos 7.9 before a hard drive issue, therefore a new OS needed to be reinstalled.
On the post install reboot, I get

I reboot in Troubleshooting mode as to recreate the GRUB2 files as per these instructions:

When I open the BIOS firmware upgrade tool, I can see that the machine has an EFI folder with the necessary files.

I have fomatted the hard drives as per the centos docs, but it is not working for me.
Any ideas would be more than welcome. Thanks

What media are you performing the install from and how did you create it?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

I mean what media did you install FROM not to. And how did you copy the iso file to it?

BTW, your images are all too small to be read - though since they are of the wrong thing, it doesn't really matter.

I am using a USB stick with

CentOS-7-x86_64-Everything-2009.iso

using

Code: Select all

sudo dd if=/home/user1/Downloads/CentOS-7-x86_64-Everything-2009.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=512k status=progress
on a lenovo running Ubuntu 20.4

Sorry for not reading the FROM.

I have created a new USB boot key using the same method as above using
CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2009.iso

But I get the same errors. Any thoughts most welcome.

just "throwing this out there" - try appending ;sync to that command to ensure you don't pull the key out before it has completed writing. dd returns to the command prompt when buffering is complete, but that doesn't mean that writing the key has completed.

Perhaps not the issue, but ...

Thank you Lightman. I'll try anything to get this working.
