And to add to the injury, the root folder is now locked out and the system is stating that it is near full.

When I login with KDE, dolphin opens the folders properly and the wastebasket works. But I would prefer to get GNOME back

What's the output of df?
Don't know if it will work, when using KDE, try to rename .gnome and .mozilla in your home directory.

Is the goal of renaming .gnome and .mozilla to force the machine to create new default configs?
Many thanks for help.

Your root file system is (almost) full:
/dev/sda4 51175000 50731252 443748 100% /
Look at this thread on how to find out what's using disk space:

Yes. I don't think that there is .gnome directory. I think that most user settings are in .config
Profiles of Firefox are in .mozilla but there is no need to recreate them unless they too have issues.
The (file) icons that you see on desktop are in directory Desktop

However, your more urgent issue is that filesystem / is full.
The home directories of regular users are in /home and that is not full.
The first thing is to find out where in / there are lot of files:

Code: Select all

sudo du -d 1 -mx / | sort -n
On a CentOS 7 workstation I get this:

Code: Select all

$ sudo du -d 1 -mx /  | sort -n
1	/media
1	/mnt
1	/srv
48	/etc
291	/root
1001	/var
1808	/opt
10351	/usr
13497	/
Overall, that is just 14 GiB. The /usr is the largest (as I did expect), so lets look at that:

Code: Select all

$ sudo du -d 1 -mx /usr | sort -n
1	/usr/etc
1	/usr/games
68	/usr/sbin
92	/usr/include
138	/usr/src
275	/usr/libexec
404	/usr/bin
1440	/usr/lib
2067	/usr/share
2861	/usr/lib64
3009	/usr/local
10351	/usr
The 3 GB in /usr/local is not what one would expect, but in this case I know that it is NVidia CUDA packages.

Now it is your turn to study your system to find where and what you have.

You can immediately free some space with:

Code: Select all

sudo yum --enablerepo=* clean all
sudo package-cleanup --oldkernels
The latter command is from package yum-utils and uninstalls older kernels.
It will not touch the currently running kernel and leaves two latest kernels installed too.
You can also sudo yum remove kernel-3.10.0-1160.6.1.el7.x86_64 but that does not remove all packages related to the 3.10.0-1160.6.1.

PS. The list of packages that were updated was actually quite short. Point updates are much bigger (but CentOS 7 will not get any more of those).

Code: Select all

0	/adobe
0	/media
0	/mnt
0	/srv
51	/etc
4587	/root
8130	/opt
9626	/usr
12115	/var
14747	/tmp
49255	/
I presume that /tmp should be emptied every restart. I presume I can do a

Code: Select all

sudo rm -R /tmp/
to empty all that?

As for /var

Code: Select all

[admin@centoslowdell ~]$ sudo du -d 1 -mx /var | sort -n
[sudo] password for admin:
0	/var/account
0	/var/adm
0	/var/empty
0	/var/games
0	/var/gopher
0	/var/kerberos
0	/var/local
0	/var/nis
0	/var/opt
0	/var/preserve
0	/var/target
0	/var/www
0	/var/yp
1	/var/BlackmagicDesign
1	/var/db
1	/var/snap
73	/var/cache
145	/var/log
186	/var/tmp
1017	/var/spool
1127	/var/crash
9265	/var/lib
11812	/var
I am not so comfortable with charging in there with the rm command.

I have a feeling the 2 app suppliers below are filling up the drive

1693 /var/lib/snapd
6628 /var/lib/flatpak

but I cannot see much on the web on how to clean / manage this.
Thank you

There is systemd-tmpfiles-clean.service that runs daily.

Code: Select all

man tmpfiles.d
man systemd-tmpfiles
From /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf one gets impression that removing all from /tmp is not nice:

Code: Select all

# Clear tmp directories separately, to make them easier to override
v /tmp 1777 root root 10d
v /var/tmp 1777 root root 30d

# Exclude namespace mountpoints created with PrivateTmp=yes
x /tmp/systemd-private-%b-*
X /tmp/systemd-private-%b-*/tmp
x /var/tmp/systemd-private-%b-*
X /var/tmp/systemd-private-%b-*/tmp
You should look more carefully what /tmp contains.

rpm -qd flatpak shows lot of documentation.
flatpak list should show what flatpaks you have installed.
flatpak uninstall is probably the command that removes something.

snapd: "Snappy is a modern, cross-distribution, transactional package manager designed for working with self-contained, immutable packages."
It must have documentation.

Home directory of superuser (/root), has 4GB. I would check that. The 51 MB in configs (/etc) feels lot too (but is a "small fish").

Also, the default config is to have /tmp as a tmpfs filesystem so to get that on a physical disk means that you have specifically enabled it. If it was tmpfs it would disappear at every reboot, if it's not then you have to clean it up.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.
