Resizing disk

Post by f.i.SCIENCES » 2021/03/26 17:15:50

Hello,

I just setup a new server mounted with CentOS 7.9.2009.
But the root (/) is too small. I want it to be around 900GB.

How should I do it?
Here the current config (see images).

Thank you.

From where you are now to where you want to be is such a big change that it'll be less work to start over and set it up right in the first place.
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Why do you want to resize the root filesystem?

Are you sure that you can't just create a new filesystem and mount it in a suitable location?

This. The OS files do not need much space. If you need large amount, then it is for data and you will be better off by having it in separate filesystem. You have unallocated space on your VG, so creating more LV's is easy.

Note: Your filesystems are already custom. The installer does not create separate /usr and /var by default. In fact, Red Hat recommends against separate /var filesystem. (But subdirectories of /var are ok to be on distinct filesystems.)

OK, now I understand that just creating a new file system in /opt will do the job needed.
I'm new in CentOS (or any Linux).

Could someone point me on how to use free space and create a new file system?
It's for a software that uses lots of space, disk access and resources.

Thank you all.
