Server will not reboot after yum update

Post by 360webfirm » 2020/06/27 23:20:19

Good day to you all.

I did an update like I have done several times before and this time I cannot load my server after I did a Yum Update and then rebooted server and now it will not reload. I cannot even ping the server.

I believe it's an issue with Grub not recognizing the new kernel.

I have tried a few things but I cannot get it to load.

If anyone has a fix for this or a solution, it woulod be greatly appreciated. I know some, but I am no expert with system admin. I really appreciate anyone who can help me.

Thanks so much in advance.

There's no useful info in your post. How far does it get/what's on the screen when it hangs? Do you have video drivers installed?
Remember - importing/building packages will likely "byte you in the butt" come update time, long after you'd forgotten you did that! Use repos whenever possible.

No video drivers installed, its a simple server that has C Panel on it and when I run advisor, it tells me the kernel is outdated and to run yum update which I did.

Its not the server I believe as I have a two small servers I use for my websites and I tried the other one and it was the exact same thing. Updated these servers several times in past without no issues. I had to restore both from a backup to get running again.

This is what I followed:

The system kernel is at version “3.10.0-1127.10.1.el7.x86_64”, but an update is available: 3.10.0-1127.13.1.el7.x86_64
Update the system (run “yum -y update” on the command line), and reboot the system.

I did this within WHM's terminal and it finished and went back to root line. I should have paid attention to what it said while I was updating but I did not.

When I did this, I did a reboot. It rebooted and would not come back up again. It booted into Grub as I use OVH hosting and I could go in using KVH terminal. I could try to boot into safe mode and remove new kernel. I could also try to get grub to boot into kernel, but I honestly do not know the procedure for this.

I am learning each day with server management and I am currently taking courses to better my understanding and knowledge. I really appreciate your help with this.

Didn't know you were running a 'panel'; changes everything.

'Panels' replace CentOS files with their own - making it no longer CentOS. Perhaps contacting the panel's support group?
Sorry.

Thats not good as C Panel said that the kernel is not their responsibility and they cannot help. They said that whm/cpanel updates and the kernel updates are different which I understand but also said they cannot assist with any kernel software update issues and to contact admin which is myself.

I am really stuck now and wish someone could assist me with this.

Do you have out of band access to the server console so you can logon remotely as though you were in front of the screen/keyboard? If you have, use it. If you do not then you need to contact your hoster to get support to find out what has gone wrong and how to fix it.

I can login through recovery

I used a backup to restore so it’s not messed up now but I eventutally will need to update the kernel for security purposes and when I did it will cause and issue after I try to boot into new kernel after reboot as I tried it with two separate servers and same thing happened nothing loaded at all. Even could not ping but can get grub to show up and command line when in recovery mode.
