CentOS 7.8 and DVD burning (seems like dual-layer is mandatory)

Post by testedinproduction » 2020/06/01 15:40:23

Hello,

EDITED: Please note this discussion at viewtopic.php?f=47&t=74443

This is my first post in the CentOS forums. I'm not new to Linux, I'm one of the most frequent contributors on the Red Hat Discussion forums.

I'm writing here today regarding the DVD CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2003.iso
(087a5743dc6fd6706d9b961b8147423ddc029451b938364c760d75440eb7be14 CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2003.iso)

I attempted to burn the CentOS 7.8 ISO to a normal DVD, yet every method I can use (command line or dvd-burn-gui of any selection) results in an error that the ISO won't fit.

I know the initial solution I've received for my query for this is to use a dual-layer DVD, but I'm hoping that somehow perhaps the CentOS 7.8 DVD can be pared down slightly so that it will fit on a regular DVD. I realize that expectation might prove false though.

Some of the customers I support do not allow flash drive such as USB thumb drives, else I'd take that route.

Kind Regards,
RJ

It's already as small as it can be made.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.

Thanks Trevor,

I'll then use dual-layer DVDs.

Appreciate the reply,

Kind Regards

The problem here is that the SIZE of the image is missing from the description of the download image - on ALL references I see.

That said, dual layers have been pretty much the 'standard' for some time now. ;)
Remember - importing/building packages will likely "byte you in the butt" come update time, long after you'd forgotten you did that! Use repos whenever possible.

RJ your problem is not unique. Dual Layer is de rigueur when it comes to data burning, that said if you go into some place like say Walmart all they have in stock are the ubiquitous single layer DVD kind. Could not find Dual Layer DVD's to save my life and I checked several places. Ultimately I resorted to buying a boatload (read Tall Spindle Stack) of Dual Layer DVDs online. I now have both Single Layer and Dual Layer DVD's, and use thumb drives to move stuff off a drive to free up space in a hurry.
