I've not yet seen anyone ask: what sort of RAID are we talking abouthere? Is it a hardware RAID controller? A FakeRAID controller? Or Linux software RAID? Post the output from lspci -nn | grep -i raid so we can see the details of the hardware (if it is).

It is a hardware RAID controller. Perc 6. I'll have to reinstall the OS to run that command.

What does the iDRAC make of the problem? Hardware errors will get logged in one of the two logs it keeps so if you have hardware problems on the component disks of the array, they will be listed in those logs.

I'll see if i can recreate the error to check. I'll set the hard drives up in no raid and install centos on raid 1

The iDRAC logs should be persistent and stretch back - in most cases - years.

The iDRAC is the integrated Dell Remote Access Controller. Most Poweredge machines have them. It allows for remote console and control. You don't access it from linux but you can use it to logon as though you were sitting in front of the computer.

Okay what I'll do is clear the logs, set the drives up as RAID 1 and centos. Then when it says the RAID 1 array has failed the error should then be easier to spot in the logs

Yes, I am entering the logs from the server BIOS screen. I forgot how to access them but I found it here
