Make sure you choose a supported network card model in the VMWare settings for the VM. The default on some versions is some ancient 100Mbps card that's no longer supported by CentOS 7. The Intel e1000 works.
CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

CentOS 5 is dead, do not use it.

That is the network properties on your host. You need to set the virtual network interface type for the virtual machine in your VMware settings, which is completely independent of that on the host.

Hi Yocef,

Had exactly the same problem.
Was solved by :

1. Stop the guest machine (CentOS)
2. Remove the NIC (network card) from your guest
3. Reboot the guest machine, you'll obviously have no network
4. Stop your guest again
5. Add back the NIC
6. Reboot the guest machine and now it should work fine
