stacktrace during install of Centos 7 on Dell Inspiron 1501

I am getting a kernel stackstrace and the installer halts when attempting to use the DVD iso on a Dell Inspiron laptop, that currently has Centos 6.7 installed.

I have tried using two different usb sticks with the iso dd'd to it as well as a DVD that I burned using Windows Disk Image Burner. The installation fails identically with all 3 methods. The kernel and initrd.gz appear to load successfully, I see a bunch of output ending with loading raminitrd, after which the kernel dumps a stacktrace. I don't know how to capture it to include here, but this line seemed to stand out from the others, and is about the 10th from the last line:

What I've done:
Ran the memtest x86 for 15+ hours, 15 runs, no memory errors found.

verifed the md5sum of the iso image I'm using.

As I indicated, my laptop is running Centos6.7 without any problems. It has 2GB of installed ram. I want to do a fresh install on this system of Centos 7, and do not wish to preserve anything from the currently installed OS. Should be straight forward, right? I'm wondering if this laptop is too old to be supported.

Here is some system info from the output of dmidecode and some other linux commands run from the currently-installed OS. I'd be happy to provide any other info that might be useful. Any help would be much appreciated :)

CentOS 6 will die in November 2020 - migrate sooner rather than later!

If that's an AMD machine, try booting with the extra kernel parameter initcall_blacklist=clocksource_done_booting (you hit tab at the initial boot menu prompt and append that to the end of the current list). If that makes it work then once you are installed you'll need to yum update to get the newer kernel. You may need to append that same string to the kernel command line again for the first post-install boot as well. You could also get the latest rolling release media and use that for the install too as that already contains the fixed kernel.

thank you very much! Passing the extra kernel parameter worked. I'm doing a yum update now to get the kernel update along with everything else.

For future searchers, this workaround helped with a similar (but not identical) backtrace generated during CentOS 7 (rev 1511) installation on an HP Probook 6455b laptop. This also has an AMD CPU but did not show the AMD-related system calls in the backtrace.

So if you get a stack trace / back trace during CentOS 7 installs on any AMD system, trying the above clock workaround might be a good quick check before attempting more debugging.
