MTP support on centos 7 (and realistic memory requirements)

Post by Shaggy1 » 2014/12/04 13:24:00

Hi

I recently installed centos 6, but on trying to transfer some mp3 files from my mp3 player realised that Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) was not supported. I did some searching and put out a post on the centos 6 forums and it looks like getting MTP going on centos 6 will be quite painful.

One of the replies I got from the centos 6 forums suggested that centos 7 does support MTP. Does anyone now if this is indeed the case ?

If centos 7 supports MTP I guess it will probably be easier for me to install that. However the reason I installed centos 6 was because from my searches the recommended memory requirement seemed to be 1G (https://access.redhat.com/articles/rhel-limits, http://wiki.centos.org/About/Product). I do not have a gig of memory (my system reports me as having about 800M).

Other sites (https://www.computersnyou.com/3336/cent ... -upgrading, http://wiki.centos.org/Manuals/ReleaseNotes/CentOS7), on the other hand, say the minimum memory is 512M.

Does anyone know if centos 7 is usable if you have less than 1G of memory ? And if not how I might be able to cut it down, so I can install it on a machine with about 800M of memory ?

Hi

A bit of gooling indicated that fedora 20 included mtp support, so I bit the bullet and tried to install that on my machine (despite the recommended RAM also being 1G for this). The install went through (remarkably easily) and mtp is indeed supported on fedora 20 and I can now see the files on my mp3 player. It took some additional install steps (installing mp3 codecs, fusion and vlc) to enable support for playing the mp3 files - commands for which I found at the following sites:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/questi ... -like-mp3/
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/questi ... -to-music/

Memory usage is, however, being pushed to the limit so now I'll have to find out how to minimise it.
