CentOS, LAMP, everything.

Post by karlo » 2014/11/19 10:26:09

Hi,

I am really new with CentOS, I am mainly a Debian user. A friend of mine wants to set up his own server. He wants to know the type of hardware that can support 15,000 session requests per hour, with a LAMP structure for his website. He is also asking me about the price of whatever that I am doing because he might refer me to some of his clients. I have no idea about the hardware part because I usually get a VPS and a dedicated server from Kimsufi. It seems that he wants to buy the hardware on his own. I don't know what kind of hardware to recommend him.

Well for the LAMP thing, I can use Bitnami, Virtualmin, or even Vesta CP? Because they install the LAMP stuff, right?

I have no idea about the pricing of the labor of doing such things. I am thinking of telling him to get cPanel or something to make things easier for him. I also don't know if there is fail2ban for CentOS and on how to configure it. How long do you think it will take me to install and configure everything?

Thanks.

UPDATE: He purchased a server with the following specs:

CPU:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1650 v2 @ 3.50GHz
Core : 12
Cache : 12288KB
RAM:
4x 16384MB
HD:
2 x 3000 GB

Do you think it can already handle 15,000 sessions an hour? Also, Plesk 12 and CentOS 6 are both installed. I have no idea what Plesk 12 is.

How long is a piece of string? Seriously, you could have 15,000 clients idle and doing nothing, yeah that machine should be able to handle that (there's enough empherical ports, RAM etc. available - ofcourse we're ignoring the amount of RAM the OS, app(s) and services take up, but it's unlikely to fill up 64GB). So are you going to have a mirror set up on your drivers? Are you planning on round robin load balancing over the mirror? What are you serving? Is the median of all client transmissions around 5 bytes? Or 50GB? The list of questions can go on and on...

One way to establish an estimate (and I must emphasise an estimate), it to measure (say) 100 clients and extrapolate that up.

I just talked to him. And he just basically wants to optimize his current system:

CPU:
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1650 v2 @ 3.50GHz
Core : 12
Cache : 12288KB
RAM:
4x 16384MB
HD:
2 x 3000 GB

Plesk 12 and CentOS 6

The computer is in production, serving AT LEAST 15,000 requests an hour. He wants me to optimize the entire LAMP. Any ideas on how can I do that? He's Italian so I guess there was a bit of misunderstanding earlier.

As you were told in your other post - viewtopic.php?f=13&t=49695&p=210913#p210913 -
we do not support Plesk's web stack. Now that you have installed Plesk, you need to go to them for support.
