Gnome Extensions?

Post by loftyhauser » 2014/07/27 22:23:01

Now that CentOS has Gnome 3 (by default, even), it's important to be able to install extensions so that the desktop is more usable. There are a few different ways that I'm aware of to install extensions:

1. Yum install if the extension is packaged (system-wide)
2. Using the one-click web-interface at https://extensions.gnome.org/ (only for the logged-in user)
3. Installed from source (either in the user's home dir or system-wide)

I'm trying to install the gnome system monitor applet, that has not been packaged. It's available at https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/ ... m-monitor/, but the web site isn't recognizing that I have Gnome 3 installed since it give the error message: "We cannot detect a running copy of GNOME on this system, so some parts of the interface may be disabled" and there is no button to install the extension. Is there a Firefox plugin that's required?

It can also be installed via source from https://github.com/paradoxxxzero/gnome- ... tor-applet. I've gone through the same installation steps that are listed for Fedora (and that have worked for the last few Fedora releases), but the extension doesn't load (and the error shown in Tweak Tool is "error loading extension").

How can new Gnome 3 extensions be installed in CentOS 7? How can I go about trouble-shooting this particular extension? I noticed this behavior with the RHEL 7 Beta, but I thought it was simply due to the beta build...

Thanks!

Well, I guess someone else came across similar problems... With "yum install gnome-shell-browser-plugin" I can browse to https://extensions.gnome.org and the site recognizes the Gnome 3 installation. I installed the system-monitor extension, restarted Gnome Shell and it works. I'm curious to know why the installation from source didn't work...
