Install using LVM on Software RAID1

Post by fukawi2 » 2014/07/16 00:33:15

Perhaps I'm missing something, but can someone point me in the right direction for installing with LVM on top of Software RAID1?

I have 2 disks, I want to partition them with 2 partitions each:

Code: Select all

/dev/sdX1 == 500mb, RAID1 for /boot
/dev/sdX2 == Remainder of disks, RAID1 holding a single LVM VG
I've (kind of) figured out how to do RAID, but I seem to only be able to do RAID or LVM, not both. It was fairly straight forward in 6.x, but this new installer seems quite immature still.

What I do is install a small (physical and size wise) USB flash drive on the motherboard and put /boot on that, makes everything much simpler when you are trying to do software RAID. Chances of a USB flash drive used just for boot failing are minimal and just in case it does I have a cron job that rsyncs it onto /var every night so worst case is boot from rescue CD, copy everything to new flash drive and install grub on it.

I tried in a KVM guest but couldn't get the installer to do LVM on top of RAID either.

Same problem here,

In 6.x that was a simple task, but... new installer in 7.0 is quite strange.
It's beautiful, colourfull, but I think that there should be some kind of "Expert partitioning mode" button :)

This scenario (software Raid & LVM) is a typical installation for me (I use it for virtualization), but how can I do this in 7.0 ?

Any ideas ?

A kickstart would probably work around this. I forget if the C7 installer lets you use the existing layout but if it did you could your system up using the 6 installer and then bail on that install once it writes to the disk & creates filesystems.

Yeah, I've just tried that.
Boot to shell, create custom layout by fdisk, mdadm, pvcreate, vgcreate, lvcreate..... then start installer.
The only one setting I've made in installer was mount points and.... fatal error when the installation should start (begining of the copying RPMs...)

I have no ideas how to do such simple scenario :(

if you go with kickstart theres a bug in anaconda. you cant grow lvm volumes on top of md raid device.
go with fixed size for logical volumes and grow in post section of kickstart.
