Failed to install Centos 7.9-2009

Post by pavan.kaparthi » 2022/05/24 09:43:34

Hi all,
I'm trying to install Centos 7.9-2009, initial installation lines were gone through, comes to a point where it says 'Starting installer, one moment', after the attached screenshot, comes up blank. Will someone be able to advise here, please? Thank you.

How long did you wait? And what is your installation source?
The future appears to be RHEL or Debian. I think I'm going Debian.

CentOS 5 and 6 are deadest, do not use them.

Thanks for your reply, Trevor. Waited probably around an hour. The installation source was virtual media CD/DVD as I'm installing via iDRAC (Installing on hardware, Dell R440). The installation file is CentOS-7-x86_64-DVD-2009.iso. FYI - The external screen/monitor, keyboard and mouse are connected straight to the server and the black screen on the monitor too.
For testing, I've tried the same installation file in a VMWare environment and after the screenshot in my initial post, loads the GUI install but not on the hardware. Is this because of some graphics issue on hardware and unable to display GUI installation? Any thoughts?

I know a R440 (with Matrox G200eW3) where there is CentOS 7 on bare metal.
According to /root/anaconda-ks.cfg the install has been graphical.
I can't recall, whether iDRAC console or physical monitor+keyb were used.

You could try text-mode install (the inst.text option?) or VNC.

Are you installing using the iso mounted as a virtual CD drive through the iDRAC? That is incredibly slow and if you do not append the right parameters to the kernel install line then it will attempt to start a GUI which means it has to download the entire GUI subsystem and all the required libraries etc via the slow iDRAC virtual CD.

Oh, and another thing, Dell created a new virtual console type and made it default and it doesn't work on CentOS 7. You need to flip it back. Logon to the iDRAC and use Configuration->Virtual Console and set it to HTML5 not to the default eHTML5. The latter does not work.

Thanks for the reply Trevor and jlehtone. Managed to install via VNC, it's not a headless system though. As I mentioned earlier, a proper monitor was connected as well but doesn't display anything, just a blank screen. Still trying to understand why doesn't display, is that because of the graphics issue? It's the latest server with 13th gen CPU.
Yes Trevor, mounted as a virtual CD via iDRAC. As it doesn't display installed via VNC but quite fast, not slow though.

Don't forget to change the iDRAC console type to HTML5 from eHTML5. The eHTML5 version does not work, at least not with CentOS 7.
