Thank you all for your help.
I liberated 20 Gigs from the Root folder thank to you and the machine is running far more fluidly.
As for the initial question about a disappeared finder & desktop and the folders linked to Disk Usage. Whilst fiddling around with Application Installer, I discovered that Nautilus file management was not installed. After installing it, my desktop came back. I had to deactivate the GNOME Desktop plugin in Tweaks, if not, I had duplicate icons.
I also stumbled across a purge tmp settings panel that was turned off in the Prvacy settings. I turned it back on and the tmp folder cleaned itself upon a restart.
So all looks much better.
I don't understand why Nautilus was uninstalled, so good to know.
