Do you have an /etc/X11/xorg.conf? If so, try renaming it to something different, not a file ending in .conf at all. The default for most video cards just works using autodetection so no xorg.conf file is usually required.
is "old, monolithic" config.
One may also have multiple *.conf files in directory /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/
The X11 configuration has multiple sections.
If you don't have some section in files, then X11 server uses its defaults for that.
You can also add/change options to a section in additional file(s).
