Is CentOS 7 going to support Ryzen 5000 series CPUs?!

I have been waiting for some sort of update from CentOS 7 so it supports AMD Ryzen 5000 series CPUs?
When I try to install CentOS after the upgrade, it crashes and I have seen other people posting the same exact issue! I really need CentOS7 for my work and it's starting to get annoying!!!

If the support is not there now then I have doubts that it ever will be. CentOS 7 has already transitioned into the phase of its life where RH no longer add new hardware support. Of course, if some massive customer who spends $$$$$ with them tells them that they want it then it might arrive but if you or I ask about it, I suspect we're likely to be told to use CentOS/RHEL 8.

HUMMMMM Thanks for the Update!! That is kind of shocking. I'm thinking going to the Ryzen 3900x or 5900x on the "New Build" that will be finished 1Q or 2Q 2021 but planning on installing on it CentOS 8.X -- whenever CentOS 8 becomes more usable ( ie when it no longer sits up and barks). I have some hopes for 8.3... whenever that comes out!! RHEL 8.3 is out, so I hope I'll be able to kick the tires of CentOS 8.3 within the "Near Future".

Truthfully I would thought that with EOL of RHEL 7 another 4 years away RHEL they would have included everything up to and including Zen 3 CPU's which marks the end of AMD's AM4 Socket DDR4, RAM, and the X570 Chipset, in short having reached the zenith of the AM4 socket and DDR4 RAM the one of the best and most stable OS's out there. By 2Q or 3Q 2022 there is going to be a huge disruption when the AM5 Socket, DDR5 RAM, and X670 Chipset is introduced. RHEL 7 was / is the logical place for all that "OLD" technology.

More impetus to start *seriously* kicking the tires of CentOS 8. Hopefully 8.3 does not howl when the moon is full.

Well, that's terrible news!!! I would assume Zen3 CPU are gonna be used in many systems in near future and many platforms might be relying on CentOS 7! It has at least three years left of its life span and they dropping support for hardware like AMD CPUs that doesn't make any sense to me!! I'm hoping my collaboration moves to CentOS 8 sooner than later then, which is not gonna happen in the next 6 months probably!!

CentOS 8 is also not working with Zen 3! I'm a gamer and also work so I always have a dual boot! After upgrading to Nvidia 3080 and AMD zen 3, I'm stuck with ubuntu which does not work properly for my needs!!! It's unbelievable CentOS 7 might not be supporting something like Zen 3 CPUs!!!!!

Well hold onto your horses for a second: Zen 3 (the 5xxx Series) CPUs were just released to the market on November 4th, 2020 -- a little more than 3 weeks ago. Zen 2 (3xxx Series) CPUs were released last year. The current version of CentOS 8 is CentOS 8.2 (2004) was released in April of this this year so support for Zen 3 would not be, of course, included. RHEL 8.3 however was released on 3 Nov 2020 -- the day *before* Zen 3 CPUs were released to market so it is *possible* that support for Zen 3 CPUs will be included when CentOS 8.3 becomes available. There definitely should be support for Zen 3 CPUs by the time RHEL 8.4 comes out. So keep the faith. the Zen 3 CPUs literally just came out!

If I may ask what type of rig have you got? Obviously fairly new if you have a Zen 3 CPU.

I am sort of in the same boat as you, but not quite: I am in the process of a "Piecemeal Build" that started around last November of my NEXT workstation which I hope to debut in either in Q1 or Q2 2021. All the Parts I buy are bought during SALES -- I am clearly looking forward to Cyber Monday!!

So far, for instance, I have bought a Corsair Carbide 200R Case; a Corsair TX750M Semi Mod. Gold Certified PSU; a Seagate 2TB HDD (for Backup only); a 1TB Crucial 2.5" SSD; a 24X DVD Player; a whole boatload of 120mm PWM fans. Indeed if I can find parts on SALE that I know I'll need I jump on them.

I was waiting to find out if a NEW motherboard using the X670 Chipset was was going to come out when the Ryzen 9 Zen 3 CPUs were to be released later this year. The answer is NO. When ASUS re-issued their Prime X570 Pro Motherboard that SOLD OUT within months of the release of the Ryzen 9 Zen 2 (the 3xxx Series) CPU's, and NOT wanting that to happen yet again, as soon as I saw one on SALE (of course) for $199, when it is normally priced at $239.99, I jumped on it. I also bought a Noctura NH-U12S Chromax CPU Cooler -- on SALE and saved something like $60; leaving now only the CPU and Memory.

Like you I plan on adding the NEW Zen 3 CPU (probably the 5900X if and when it comes back -- the few I have found are fetching premium prices -- some $150 - $250 more than AMD's $549 which is way too rich for my blood), If the Prices remain too elevated I may punt and drop back to the 3900X (Zen 2). Some of these things may have to wait until I get my bills paid down.

For the memory I know it will be GSkill DDR4 Trident Z Neo in 32 GB DIMMS with initially 64GB installed -- half of the 128 GB, with a clock speed of 3200 or 3600 without O.C. -- this is a Workstation not a Gaming Platform. I BLEW a chance to buy a Corsair Force Series MP600 1TB Gen4 PCIx 4.0 X4 NVMe SSD. In short this *should* be future proof for at least 10 years. The OS will be CentOS 8.x but right now 8.2 is a DOG!! I am hoping that 8.3 will be a LOT better, and I have a small 250GB SSD floating around that I can install in my testbed to "kick the tires".

The next major shift comes when Zen 3+ is released in Q2 or Q3 2022 which will require the AM5 Socket, use DDR5 memory, and use the X670 chipset from what I have read. There is some talk that PCIx 5.0 will make an appearance at this time as well. When these NEW everything -- Zen 3+ CPU, AM5 Socket, RAM, Chipsets, PCIx 5.0, Motherboards, etc., -- come out the prices are going to be sky high.

I just get B550 + 5900X today, and I can't install 7 on it. It's really bad for me, because all my stuff is developed on centos 7 and all software I'm using is not really support for 8. Hope 7.10 can release with Ryzen 5000 series CPU.

I really doubt it. The RHEL 7.9 release notes say something along the lines of "this is the last RHEL 7 point release". The time for new hardware additions is gone.

Install some version or derivative of Debian (Ubuntu, Mint, etc) and, if you still need to run CentOS, run it in a Docker container, or a Virtual Machine.

Just a totally off-the-wall suggestion: can you install C8 (or an alternative) and then run a C7 in a VM for your "stuff"?
