CentOS 4.3 on Vmware ESX, with correct clock

Post by nader » 2006/03/29 13:49:13

Just wanted to inform of how I set up a CentOS4.3 on VMware ESX running on a IBM Bladecenter blade with 2/2 CPU's

1. You need to get the BusLogic driver from vmware: http://www.vmware.com/download/esx/esx2-rhel4-update.html
2. You need to download CentOS 4.2 ServerCD (from the vault) http://vault.centos.org/4.2/isos/i386/CentOS-4.2.ServerCD-i386.iso
You need to use this since 4.2 ServerCD uses i686 for installation, not i586 as the other 4.2/4.3
3. Create your VM and boot from the CD (or iso)
4. Use "linux dd" for driver disk as boot
5. When you're prompted for driver disk, mount the disk (and install the BusLogic driver)
6. Do whatever installation you want
7. Add to /etc/yum.conf (you need to exclude the kernel for the BusLogic driver to continue to work after patch)
8. yum update (to upgrade to 4.3)

To correct the clock, you need to do following:
1. log on the web interface, choose options->advanced options and set
Misc.TimerHardPeriod = 100 (default 1000)
2. log on the VM and add to /etc/grub.conf
kernel....... clock=pit
3. Set up ntp to correct the clock

I've tried many different settings for the clock, but this worked for me.

I wanted to install CentOS 4.3, so I had to re-create the VMWare BusLogic driver disk. I made the following changes:

- update to 2.6.9-34
- use vfat filesystem
- build vfat disk image by default

Using the vfat filesystem means that you can use the same disk image for a "driver disk" AND kickstart (put ks.cfg in root of floppy).

It worked perfectly with VMWare ESX 2.5.3 and CentOS 4.3 (with or without kickstart):

Let me know if you have any problems!

Do you know what it would take to get the correct BusLogic driver for CentOS 4.5 running on either ESX 2.5.4 or 2.5.5?
