Centos 4.1 still available from somewhere?

Post by kamina » 2006/02/11 12:09:54

Is there any place where Centos 4.1 could still be downloaded from? I found the torrent, but nobody seems to be seeding it anymore..

You can certainly get it on the eDonkey network but my question would be, why 4.1 when the current version is 4.2?

4.2 has the kernel compiled with gcc 3.4.5, but the compiler is not available as an rpm yet. I need to compile some modules, and want it to go as simply as possible (because in case of a disaster I might not be the one rebuilding the server). Untill the new gcc is released, I prefere to use 4.1 for the servers running vmware.

Ah, I see - it was just curiosity on my part.. As I said you can get it on edonkey but it may take you a while.

Thanks for your help. I got emule, and found 3 sources. Looks like it could take weeks to finish though...

edit:

Is there a reason why the Centos tracker is rejecting the older versions torrent? Would'nt the bandwidth be coming from users, not them?

Don't know why I did'nt find this with google, but it seems Centos is keeping the old cd images online. I would'nt really recomend emule, as I only managed to download 40MB of the dvd during the whole weekend!

Anyway, old versions are kept here: http://vault.centos.org/

Centos 4.1 still available from somewhere?

Post by irlandes » 2006/03/16 22:55:28

I did not totally understand the reason for dropping back. Since I am thinking of trying CentOs on my Dell Inspiron 2650, I am wondering if there is any reason to think I can't do normal build from tarballs. And, since I did not understand the compiler problem i just want to know if 4.2 will give any problem if I try to install tarballs the same way I have done with other distros in the past.

Thanks, I admit I simply did not understand the problem poster listed.

I happen to have 4 and 4.1 and 4.2 iso's. 4 had a kppp problem which 4.2 didn't have when I put it on my old 400MHZ Dell desktop, but if 4.1 has an advantage, I could sure use that instead but never tried if due to time spent in the Third World...

Now that CentOS 4.3 is out, the gcc versioning problem should be solved. Or am I missing something?
