Do you mean 2.6.9-42.EL or 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL kernel?

If you mean 2.6.9-42.EL, then try updating the kernel to 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL

Otherwise, go backwards and try the 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL kernel or go to kernel.org, get a new source and compile to your specs.

Never read a description of why the 2.6.9-42 version changed so quickly, but I would assume that problems existed in the original version.

As far as I know, 2.6.9-42.EL and 2.6.9-42.0.2.EL were placed on the mirrors at the same time, although the dates at the time differed by a week or so. On some systems, I run auto updates nightly and never saw the 2.6.9-42.EL kernel installed on those systems.
