"Warning: unable to open initial console " at amd 64, why?

Post by montylee » 2006/09/05 07:01:19

Hello , all

I have used centos for some years. and I have compiled the lastest 2.6.x kernel without module support.
But I can't booting at all with this kernel at centos 4.x based.

kernel : 2.6.17 / 2.6.18-rc*
CPU : AMD Opteron(tm) 275
CentOS release 4.3 (Final)

All works well at centos 3.x, but when I compile kernel and reboot at centos 4.x at same server
the message like below... and not boot...

"Warning: unable to open initial console "

I have kernel compiled over 30 times, but the result was same..
Is there any change at centos 4.x?
Why I can't kernel compile at 4.x?

Thanks in advance....

Sounds like you missed something....... what steps did you take to build the kernel???

Normally I use;

make mrproper

make menuconfig
make
make modules_install
make install

The results;

$ uname -a
Linux Aspire5000 2.6.17.11 #1 Wed Aug 23 20:24:56 EDT 2006 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
