CentOS 4.2 security update

On my desktop I just have a shell script in /etc/cron.weekly that calls yum -y update, marked as executable with chmod. Cron sees it automatically.

I'd be careful about having a server auto-update. First, you never know if updating will break something, and second, you generally need to restart the affected services before the security updates take affect. That means noticing what was updated and needs to be restarted.

Or you could simply do:
chkconfig yum on
This will start the yum daemon which will download and install updates all on its own.
It will work next time you boot your box. if you do need it instantly then do:
service yum start
