IMAP current command did not succeed. Inbox not viewable

Post by kphillips » 2008/03/28 15:48:23

I encountered another problem last night. I'm using dovecot-0.99.11-8.EL4 as an IMAP server. I was using SquirrelMail from a client to move messages from my Inbox to the Trash when it suddenly threw up an error message that the command didn't succeed, etc. I could access other folders and also send mail but could not read messages in my Inbox. The full message I'm getting from Thunderbird is "The current command did not succeed. The mail server responded: Internal error occurred. Error report written to server log." I've read several posts from the past few years about this error. I've tried deleting the index files and subscription files. I've tried completely deleting the INBOX folder. I've even tried removing and re-installing Dovecot but nothing seems to work. I've tried unsubscribing to the folders and re-subscribing. I can't access the Inbox through POP3 either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Close thunderbird completely.
Use Squirrelmail to fix the inbox.
Delete any unwanted inbox mail.
Create a temporary mail folder.
Move any inbox mail you want to keep to this temporary folder.

Then manually truncate the inbox, and delete the index.

The only long term solution is to move away from mbox to maildir format.

Thanks for the reply. Could you please give me more details about how to use SquirrelMail to fix the Inbox? When I log into SquirrelMail I receive the error message ERROR: Could not complete request. Query: SELECT "INBOX" Reason Given: Internal error occured. Error report written to server log . . . . After I get this fixed, then do I change the mail environment in the dovecot.conf file?

Then inbox is probably unrecoverable.
You could try hand editing the garbage that is confusing imap.
I can't help you with that.
You may have to truncate the inbox, and delete the index files.
These would be in ~/.imap/INBOX

OK, can you please give me an example of truncating the INBOX?

> INBOX

I believe you should hire a consultant.
