How to install Samba from the cmd line

Post by Sammy95 » 2008/03/08 23:39:33

Hello !

I have just installed Centos 4.4 on a home server. It works nicely. :)
Used the Server CD so I am left with no GUI, cmd line only.

I did follow a tutorial and this tutorial did not include to install Samba. So I left it out.
Since I have several Win computers here, I have found out that I do want to install it.

Could someone tell me how to do this?

And please, in an easy way so that even I could understand it.
As You prob have figured out I have no experience at all on Linux shell, but willing to learn.

Thank You very much for spending Your time to help.

Sammy :)

Good. You can find documentation at:

http://www.centos.org/docs/4/

Take a look at:

http://www.centos.org/docs/4/html/yum/

to learn about yum. Because one of the first things you want to do is to make your system up-to-date.

yum update

For example, samba can be easily installed by yum:

yum install samba samba-common samba-client

Hello :)

Thank You very much for the links and examples.

Will jump over to the YUM docs folders and take a look.

Looks easy :)

But I have trouble to understand that CentOS knows
where to find the packages just by me typeing YUM INSTALL SAMBA ....

That is probably because you have not read the yum docs yet.

If you type that, it won't know.

Okey !?

If You mean that I did type it in Upper Capital letters, I know it won't work.. Linux is not linux..
Also that the last part of the command is missing (my dots where to substitute his typing)

Others from that.. - then I don't know..
