Fan on Dell D630 won't turn off after recent update

Post by hank_le » 2008/11/17 15:35:39

Hi,

I've got a Dell D630 laptop running CentOS 4 with the latest nvidia drivers. Last week I did a yum update to the latest kernel 2.6.9-78.0.5.ELsmp, and now the fan in the laptop won't shut off. How can I adjust the fan control (via acpi?) to get the fan to shut down?

The cpu temp isn't bad -- cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/THM/temperature gives:
temperature: 38 C

and the cpus seem to be idle -- as per cat /proc/cpuinfo , the cpus are idle at 800 MHz :

Ok, I'm replying to my own post in hopes of helping anyone else who sees something like this happen.

Another individual I know had the same problem, and she narrowed it down to the latest Nvidia drivers and the bios. Downgrading the nvidia driver or upgrading the bios fixed the problem.
