I have been getting the same error (well, almost) trying to install CentOS 4.4 on a Supermicro 1U server.

My error is: "kernel panic - not syncing: drivers/ide/pci/piix.c:398: spin_lock(drivers/ide/ide.c:c0388c68) already locked by drivers/ide/ide-iops.c/1234"

Hardware is:
Supermicro X5DPA-GG MB
Dual 2.8GHz Intel Xeon Processors
4GB RAM
2x 80GB parallel IDE disk
parallel IDE CDROM
USB keyboard/mouse

I've been trying to set up the drives with a SW RAID1 array for /, and some swap, but I get the error even if I just try to install to a single drive.

The kernel oops always happens during the glibc rpm install.

I've tried running the install without SMP, with ACPI turned off, with USB off, in text mode, etc. None of it helped...

Does anyone have a solution?

Thanks,
Dave

Are you sure that HW is OK.

For example I had problems installing CentOS with some old CD-ROMs. Try replacing CD-ROM drive.

During installation you can use Ctrl+Alt+F1 or 2 I do not remember wich one to have additional info.

Do not forget to check cd's for errors.

I had problems installing rhl many moons ago on a dual Pentium III system.

Check this out. It may help (and it may not, but hey! it's Linux)

Hi group,

I am new to this group, but I had the same problem just this past week on a similar system, and the following was my solution to the problem:

Replace the ribbon type IDE cable with the shielded ATA33 cables. Problem gone and did a full install, twice actually, without a single glitch. :)

I have an Epox motherboard with a Pentium III MMX CPU @ 533 Mhz, with 3 X 128 MB memory sticks. Initially, I thought it was my old Teach CD reader who was causing the issue, so I replaced it with a brand new LG CD/DVD reader/burner combo. Problem persisted, so I thought that perhaps the new 80 GB EIDE was causing the problem, so that is when I replaced the IDE cable, and voila! Problem gone!

Hope this will help others.

Serge

This is a correct fix. I had 2 servers that had dual Pent 3 procs and I replaced the cables in both of them and CentOS installed with no issues. These were old servers that were left over from a previous build. Still do not know why the cables were bad in both of them. Even the speed of the install increased.
