HP DL140 SATA 160GB Boot Problem

Post by imognimma » 2005/07/16 20:28:19

Hi,

I'm trying to install CentOS 4.0 on an HP Proliant DL140 with 2* 160 GB SATA disks. the installation runs smoothly, but after the reboot the boot loader does not work - in fact, it looks like the boot loader of the previous installation is still active. i also tried to install fedora core 3 and windows 2000 (sic!). anytime, the boot loader of the previous OS stayed active.

I installed CentOS 4.0 on the same server on a single 80 GB SATA disk and it worked without a problem.

I assume that this is some kind of serial ATA / 128 GB boundary problem (most likely the boot sector gets written to the disk somewhere at modulo 128 GB).

does anyone know how to solve this problem ? by BIOS upgrade or some CentOS tricks ?

(firmware upgrade CD image is more than 340 MB which takes 18 hours on my slow ISDN line ...)

tnx in advance.

HP DL140 SATA 160GB Boot Problem - Update

Post by imognimma » 2005/07/16 22:17:00

Hi,

It's getting even weirder: I managed to properly install the grub boot loader via the rescue mode; system boots fine with reasonable speed. but as soon as I detach the CD ROM drive from the parallel IDE connector and reboot the server, the performance goes down extremely - it takes forever to boot into the login: prompt, syncing a 100GB raid-1 volume takes 13 hours, typing on the console reminds me of historic 300baud ages.

this HP DL140 G2 device really sucks :-((

I'm not having any install problems (dual 80GB SATA in the DL140), but performance is nightmarishly slow when using md for disk mirroring.

Bonnie (google it; disk I/O benchmark) shows phenomenal throughput during I/O, but at the same time the system is 100% bottenecked on I/O waits on both CPUs.

Worse, during 'normal' I/O (like RPM installation) the system is basically down.

Really curious if anyone has been successful with this server.

Hi theurim,

You said you installed CentOS on x306 ... Which module did you use to access Array build on top of the ServeRAID 7E adapter ? (due to Adapted licensing, IBM does not provide the module in opensource, and this module is only available for RHEL 3 ... not 4).
Curious to know how you managed it ...
