Firefox 1.x

Post by vincevu2003 » 2005/05/13 05:58:08

I have used various distro recently Debian, Ubuntu, and CentOS4. The problem I am having is that CentOS 4 is the only one I am having problems with in using my Windows truetype fonts. I created /usr/share/fonts/truetype and copied all my Windows fonts (OpenOffice and other applications picks it up), but Firefox in CentOS does not use it. For example, if I go to CNN.com, the fonts should be using ARIAL, but Firefox under CENTOS uses something else - hideous font.

How do I force Firefox 1.x (now 1.04 I am using) to use the truetype fonts under CentOS. again, I only have this problem with CentOS - not Debian or Ubuntu.

Thank you.

I do not know exactly what you mean - how do I determine that? All I know is that the X server is using the free Xorg (nolonger X11?). Anyhow, if you could make the assumption on these distros based on your question, what would be the fixes (for either situation)?

Just to reiterate...other apps use my Truetype fonts - BUT Firefox. I just briefly saw that maybe it has something to do with gtk2-engines-gtk-qt (not sure, but may help that tells me I am mising something). Since I am using KDE and not Gnome as default desktop, Firefox may not be rendering like a KDE app, including the fonts.

I'm surprised noone else can see this or are people here just used to the ugly fonts in CentOS or RedHat.

Thanks.

read up on Xft here

Options to disable this -> either rebuild the firefox src.rpm file without xft support or get a firefox rpm from the mozilla.org website.

I have already installed Firefox 1.04 from source, and it made no difference.

Not that it helps you fix the true type font issue ... but:

CentOS comes with a font set called Bitstream Vera that (in my opinion) is much better than true type fonts.

Set your sans, sans-serif, mono space to Bitstream Vers Sans, Bitstream Vera Serif, Bitstream Sans Mono ... then set the Porportional font to sans-serif and I think you will like that better. (at least I do).

The standard Firefox and the one provided by redhat are not compile with xft support.
