USB device not mounting

Post by aignome » 2012/01/16 04:18:42

Hi guys (firstly, I don't all that much about RHEL's or any type of linux). secondly - I am running centos 4.9 2.6.9-89.0.23-ELsmp KDE x86_64 and No I can't upgrade centOS (The machine is dedicated to a particular piece of hardware and the companies software does not work on centOS 5 or 6).

Now - we recently upgraded from centOS 4.8 to 4.9 using up2date and everything seems ok exact it is no longer auto mounting USB devices. even a fat32 USB stick won't automount. The usb ports are fine - the infocenter detects it when you plug in but I can't view it in kwikdisk/devices list in konqueror.
the /var/log/messages shows this when you plug it in:
(to me this seems damn weird).

Jan 15 22:42:25 CENSORED kernel: usb 1-7: USB disconnect, address 4

Jan 15 22:42:38 CENSORED udevd[1387]: udev done!

using fdisk -l and then trying to mount it manually I get this:

Disk /dev/sdd: 16.0 GB, 16008609792 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 1946 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdd1 1 1947 15633392 c W95 FAT32 (LBA)
[CENSORED~]# mount /dev/sdd1 /media/key
mount: you must specify the filesystem type
[CENSORED ~]#

I also can't mount a 2TB NTFS drive (that use to mount in centOS4.8 as I have NTFS-3G installed).

so two questions how can I mount and specify the filesystem - though it is detected as FAT32 ?
How can I get it back to auto-detecting/mounting USB devices?

I know the EOL for centOS 4 is approaching but we don't have a choice but to use the obsolete OS as Applied Precision won't fix their software.

USB device not mounting

Post by pschaff » 2012/01/16 16:24:53

Haven't got a CentOS-4 system to test, but I see no reports on this upstream. I do see an old CentOS bug #772 but nothing about a change from 4.8 to 4.9.

All I can suggest is to follow the advice from the EOL Notice:

I'm experiencing the same problem.

/var/log/messages shows:
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED kernel: scsi9 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED kernel: Vendor: SanDisk Model: Cruzer Rev: 8.02
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED kernel: Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED kernel: Attached scsi removable disk sdd at scsi9, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED scsi.agent[20811]: disk at /devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1a.7/usb1/1-3/1-3:1.0/host9/target9:0:0/9:0:0:0
Jan 16 17:43:58 CENSORED udevd[1442]: udev done!
Jan 16 17:44:08 CENSORED udevd[1442]: udev done!
Jan 16 17:44:14 CENSORED hald[14947]: Timed out waiting for hotplug event 715. Rebasing to 715

I thought auto mount did work before, maybe this comes with upgrade to 4.9. Tested on 4 machines running centos 4.9

uname -a : Linux CENSORED 2.6.9-101.ELsmp #1 SMP Thu Jul 21 17:28:56 EDT 2011 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

I also can't upgrade due to old software running on these machines....

Welcome to the CentOS fora. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Good to have independent confirmation. All I can suggest (to both) is to report the problem in the bug tracker.

I imagine the bug tracker is pointless due to EOL for the package. Glad to see we are not alone in this regards. I will try the extended life cycle thing, thanks for the suggestion.

Reporting it upstream could still help by getting it into the extended support updates, if a bug is confirmed. Apparently today's 10 year support life announcement does not apply to EL4.
