Hello folks! Happy New Year! :-D
I am a new CentOS user. I am using the CentOS4.7(i386/i686) final on the VMware(player) with GNOME v2.8.0 and Firefox v3.0.1. I would like to know:
1. How to install/update the Flash plugin v10 in order to watch youtube without updating/upgrading system/browser? :-(
2. How to add/install/update a mp3 plugin to the XMMS v1.2.10 audio player to playback mp3 files without updating/upgrading system?(it can only playback wav files currently). :-(
Thank you!
JK

Welcome to the CentOS fora, and Happy New Year. Please see the recommended reading for new users linked in my signature.

Are you aware that you have installed an obsolete point release (current CentOS-4 is 4.9, with the latest installation media being 4.8) of a product that will reach endf of life in less than two months? Rather than trying to make CentOS 4 do multimedia it would be highly advisable to install CentOS-5 or CentOS-6 - the latter being preferable for long-term use.

With VMware it should be really simple to install a new system without touching the old one.

If really determined to continue with CentOS-4 then ATrpms or RPMforge are the best bets for multimedia support.

Thank you for your quick response! Are you saying that the multimedia functions such as flash plugin_v10 and mp3 plugin are not able to work is because the CentOS version which I am using is too old to support those multimedia functions? If so, I'm think about to upgrade my CentOS. BTW, do you know what the ideal size of hard drive I should give to the VMware for the upgraded system? Thank you!

I have not used CentOS-4 in too long to offer any informed opinion on the current state of multimedia support, but it is almost certainly not as good as later versions.

As far as the size of the disk, I usually give a VM a minimum of 8GB for a minimal install. For a multimedia system you may need more - probably at least 12GB. I'd go for about 20GB or more if you have the disk space to spare. Normally the virtual disk will grow as it is filled, so all the space will not be consumed until and unless needed - at least that's the way VirtualBox works by default. I have not used any VMware products since about the same time as giving up on CentOS-4.
