replacing r8169 with r8168, and modprobe

Post by denault » 2011/12/02 01:12:51

I instaledl centos 4.9 to at GA-P45T-ES3G Motherboard with at RTL8111D Ethernet device.
After see many dropped packets via 'ifconfig -a', I found this page:
http://wiki.centos.org/AdditionalResources/HardwareList/RealTekRTL8111b

I applied solution 5-2, installing the dkms-r8168 driver from RPMForge.
The new driver (r8168) loaded , but the problem still existed as the old driver
was still being used by eth0.

Then I edited /etc/modprobe.conf and replaced 'r8169' with 'r8168' in the line:
alias eth0 r8168
Now after a reboot, everything seems to be working and 'ifconfig -a' show NO dropped packets.
But, a 'ls mod' does not show the mii module running (it was running before).

My questions:

1. Was editing /etc/modprobe.conf the correct way to replace the ethernet driver? Is there a better method?

2. What is mii? Do I need it? If yes, how do I get it loading after a reboot.

Welcome to the CentOS fora.

I hope you realise that there is less than six months before CentOS 4 reaches its EOL. For a new install, CentOS 5 or CentOS 6 would be more appropriate.

Actually, the EOL is the end of February, 2012. So it's only 3 months from now.

I prefer to use a different P-word, as in: "That pesky-cat strikes again!" :-P
