can't install 4.8 - it reboots soon after beginning

I have been trying out various Linux flavours. I have successfully installed Fedora, Debian, openSUSE and
Mandriva on one system, but Centos 4.8 32-bit fails. I get the choices of installing methods: graphical or text,
and about 10 seconds after I select something, the PC just reboots.
It is a Sis648 chipset mainboard with Pentium 4, Nvidia FX5200 graphics card, DVD writer, floppy disk and
a PCI TV tuner card. Most of the parts are "new old stock": stuff that was sitting on a shelf for 4 years.
The power supply is more than adequate (and new) and there is no overheating (it is winter where I am).
I have run all sorts of hardware diagnostics and found no faults. Also this PC has Windows 2000 and XP on it,
and they have given no blue screens of death or other mysterious crashes.
