Kernel panic error... Anybody know whats wrong?

Post by blaszlo » 2008/12/04 15:03:56

Hey Guys/Gals,

I have a couple of web servers with Centos 4.2. Both of them have been running great, but when I came in this morning I got the following error... "kernel panic - not syncing: mm/mmap.c:313: spin_is_locked on uninitialized spinlock f7be8a9c"

What the hell does that mean? I have done some extensive googling and still haven't found a direct answer as to what it could be. A reboot has fixed the problem, but I still need to know for future reference what the hell happened. I am fairly new to the Linux world and have really been thrown into it head first, so I'm trying to learn all I can. Is there a log I should check? Any info is helpful. Thanks,

-Brad

First of all, CentOS 4.2 is way too old. You really have to consider updating the system to the current 4.7. You kernel panic error resembles the one reported for CentOS 4.2:

http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=1149

You can try the workaround in that bug tracker.

I have seen that link that you have given me already, and I'm afraid I do not understand still. I guess I need someone to explain it to me. That website or that link helps me NONE. Also, you are right about updating. As I said, I was kinda thrown into Linux head first with no knowledge of it whatsoever when I started my this job (even funnier, I was also told that I wouldn't have to worry about these servers at all that they are real reliable, although they have crashed 4 times on me int eh alst 6 months and have needed more maintenance than a newborn baby). Can someone explain to me what ahs happened to my server or if there arae logs I can check to help me understand?
"kernel panic - not syncing: mm/mmap.c:313: spin_is_locked on uninitialized spinlock f7be8a9c"
The kernel has tried to use a section of the memory management code that appears to be buggy and, not having any viable means to proceed, has called the panic() function.

The solution to this -- and, possibly, all the other issues you have been experiencing -- is to update your system to CentOS 4.7, as toracat has already mentioned.

You will find the system log files in the /var/log/ directory.

Thanks. I know I need to update... I don't exactly know how to update my systems here and I should post that question elsewhere, but if anyone could throw me in the right direction as to where I can get some instruction on updating that would be awesome. Thanks again!

Assuming the system is running, has a working connection to the Internet and the command rpm -q yum returns with the string like yum-version-release-details, I would first recommend that you take a look at the yum manual page:

man yum

then take a look at Section #13 in the CentOS wiki HowTos, Package Managemant, and finally update your system:

yum update
