Sound fuzzy

CentOS 4.4 x86-64, running on a K8 board with Via chips (via82xx). Under bundled KDE, sound was quite nice. Under Redhat-KDE update to 3.5.4, sound was even better. Under Gnome, sound is fuzzy with lots of crackling and volume variations. Is anyone else getting something similar?

Also, I have no idea how to implement these lines I saw in dmesg:
