General support questions including new installations

I have a Linksys WPC11v3, which uses a Prism chipset suported by the orinoco driver. The only problem is the driver included in the kernel doesn't have the ability to scan, so NetworkManager doesn't work. So I need to build the CVS version of the driver. The only problem is the binary kernel RPM doesn't include /lib/modules/`uname -r`/build! Don't Red Hat's enterprise kernels include this? The Fecora kernels do. I thought it was the standard way to compile drivers now. I have the kernel-source installed in /usr/src/linux-... and can try building against that, but if I have to actually build the sources (they are currently configured, but not built) then that's one area where I would have to call CentOS lacking. I don't want to build the whole friggin kernel on a 500 MHz laptop with 128 MB of RAM, when all I need from the build is a half dozen .o files.
