centos-yumconf 4.3 broken but released??

Why was a broken release of centos-yumconf released today? Sure there was a fix released soon after in the form of 4.4, but I can't imagine how this passed whatever quality control there must be. There is quality control or at least a quick test before a release isnt there?
The CentOS-Base.repo file in /etc/yum.repos.d/ had some syntax errors causing yum to be totally broken.
I'm worried because I run CentOS for my web servers and never thought a frequent 'yum update' would cause harm.
What do you guys do to keep your servers up-to-date without risking system stability?
Thanks,
