System wont run with re-compiled kernel

Post by kandresen » 2005/03/06 02:44:22

Hello all,

I have downloaded the kernel source files and have compiled the system without errors, but all the kernels I have compiled so far hangs in the boot process.
All the errors are related with mounting the root system under boot, mostly with mount exit codes 19 and 22.
The kernel then hangs, but no logs get written, so I have little to go on.

Could this be related with selinux?

How can I compile a kernel that works

The current kernel configuration I have tried is in the attached file

Maybe it's just me, but I can't find your config file attachment...

I would check to make sur you have the correct kernel options related to the filesystems that you use...

Hello again,

I just noticed why, the attachment was not compressed, thus did not an allowed extention...

I am by the way wondering if it is SElinux that cause the problem. ls -dZ /boot/* results as follows:
-rw-r--r-- root root /boot/boot.0300
-rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/config-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL
-rw-r--r-- root root /boot/diag1.img
-rw-r--r-- root root /boot/diag2.img
drwxr-xr-x root root system_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/grub
-rw-r--r-- root root user_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/initrd-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL.img
-rw-r--r-- root root root:object_r:boot_t /boot/initrd-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-ka-2.img
drwx------ root root /boot/lost+found
-rw------- root root /boot/map
-rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/message
-rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/message.ja
lrwxrwxrwx root root root:object_r:boot_t /boot/System.map -> System.map-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-ka-2
-rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:system_map_t /boot/System.map-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL
-rw-r--r-- root root root:object_r:boot_t /boot/System.map-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-ka-2
-rw-r--r-- root root /boot/us.klt
lrwxrwxrwx root root root:object_r:boot_t /boot/vmlinuz -> vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-ka-2
-rw-r--r-- root root system_u:object_r:boot_t /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL
-rw-r--r-- root root root:object_r:boot_t /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL-ka-2

The only one booting is the default (/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL)

Here I try again:
config-centos-custom-ka-2.zip attached

I dont know what kernel you are compiling but I never compiled a kernel before. And I was able to compile a working kernel using kernel 2.6.11.5 with grsecurity. I have zero errors and everything is working smooth. I hope this helps.

I used the default kernel source by the command:
yum install kernel-source

which set up the kernel in
/usr/src/linux-2.6.9-5.0.3.EL/

I was thinking the default sources should be matching with SElinux more easily.
