Install on VMWare ESX panics

Post by nylarahotep » 2011/03/13 00:41:09

I am trying to install CentOS 5.5/64-bit on a VMWare ESX 4.1 server. The physical server is a Dell R815 with 2 x 12 core AMD processors, 128 GB memory. The virtual machine has mostly RHEL-5/64-bit defaults, with 4 GB of memory and 40 GB of disk.

The virtual will initially boot off of the install CD ISO file, coming up with the initial splash screen. However, as soon as it starts to load the kernel image (initrd.img), it will panic and crash. I've tried tweaking various kernel boot options (including nomodprobe), without success.

The tail end of the console screen gives the following info:
Call trace:
cacheinfo_cpu_callback+0x9e/0x516

RSP <ffff810104737d60>
CR2: 000000000040
<0>Kernel panic -- not syncing: Fatal exception
I checked the memory in the physical host with a BIOS check, and I also ran the memtest from the CentOS virtual. Neither reported problems. I've used these same ISO images to install CentOS on other VM hosts, as well as on VirtualBox, without problems. I did a cksum on the file to validate that it wasn't corrupted.

Finally, it looks like RedHat 5.6/64-bit installer runs fine on this system. I guess I'm confused, and any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hmmm

what are you VM settings? Did you choose RHEL - 64-bit as system type...

Try lowering number of CPUs to 1-2 and memory to 2G just for installation - they could be changed after.

were you able to install any other 64-bit system on that host?

Yes, I choose RHEL-5 64 bit as my OS type. I tried changing this to "other Linux 64-bit" and got the same error.

I also tried reducing to 1 CPU and 2 GB memory. Same error.

I could get RHEL 5.6/64-bit to successfuly install without any problems.

I'm out of ideas...

Maybe you should go to VMware forum.

Hmm. On further investigation, this looks mighty similar to a problem reported in Bugzilla at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=607947

And could we not use keyword 'submit' for selecting the form type? I keep hitting this and loosing my posts :-(

It looks that is is...

Just try the work around pointed there...

Install older version and update to newer kernel after.

That is a bit confusing. Use the "Submit" button at the bottom.
