Unable to change date & time on CentOS 5 x86_64

I have VDS with CentOS 5 x86_64 installed on it. As a root user in SSH i've tried to change the system date and time but all the attempts to do it was unsuccessful, please help:

# date 082312002008
# date: cannot set date: Operation not permitted

Since no-one else has answered, I guess this must be something to do with your virtualisation solution preventing the change.
