[SOLVED] How to create very big LVM from ext3 partition on my XEN x64?

Post by morphix » 2010/10/22 14:02:39

Hello,
i have installed new CentOS 5.5 Xen64 server on RAID-1 internal SATA mainboard controller. This 2 disks are properly defined by lvm as Volume:
lvdisplay
--- Logical volume ---
LV Name /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol00
VG Name VolGroup00
LV UUID MafBwE-L9zy-vs0S-3CxI-xlT4-ekI0-j8p6vb
LV Write Access read/write
LV Status available
# open 1
LV Size 207.28 GB
Current LE 6633
Segments 1
Allocation inherit
Read ahead sectors auto
- currently set to 256
Block device 253:3

--- Logical volume ---
LV Name /dev/VolGroup00/LogVol01
VG Name VolGroup00
LV UUID IRJTGG-ZNFG-3exl-dQCc-Irxv-8hjI-1Yr3nt
LV Write Access read/write
LV Status available
# open 1
LV Size 25.44 GB
Current LE 814
Segments 1
Allocation inherit
Read ahead sectors auto
- currently set to 256
Block device 253:4
Here is my mount:
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00 on / type ext3 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)
devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,gid=5,mode=620)
/dev/mapper/ddf1_4c5349202020202080862925000000004711471100001450p1 on /boot type ext2 (rw)
tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw)
none on /proc/sys/fs/binfmt_misc type binfmt_misc (rw)
sunrpc on /var/lib/nfs/rpc_pipefs type rpc_pipefs (rw)
none on /var/lib/xenstored type tmpfs (rw)
/dev/sdc1 on /srv/xen/ type ext3 (rw)
I have tried to create an LVM volume on the 5 TB storage managed by a separate 3com controller as RAID-5 but I wasn't able to do this because of a very big storage. So, looking by Dr. Google first, I've created first the RAID-5 Unit on the controller, then with the "parted" created the 6 TB partition and formated it with ext3 FS.

df -h -T
Filesystem Type Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol00
ext3 201G 6.9G 184G 4% /
/dev/mapper/ddf1_4c5349202020202080862925000000004711471100001450p1
ext2 99M 52M 43M 55% /boot
tmpfs tmpfs 384M 0 384M 0% /dev/shm
none tmpfs 384M 128K 384M 1% /var/lib/xenstored
/dev/sdc1 ext3 5.4T 17G 5.1T 1% /srv/xen/

fdisk -l /dev/sdc

WARNING: GPT (GUID Partition Table) detected on '/dev/sdc'! The util fdisk doesn't support GPT. Use GNU Parted.

Disk /dev/sdc: 5999.9 GB, 5999966552064 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 729454 cylinders

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sdc1 1 267350 2147483647+ ee EFI GPT
This is not good design! When I need to increase or decrease a Unit's capacity it will be not possible. So before I'll start with the installation of virtual systems on it, how can I change the existing partition to LVM's type '8e'?. By using disk druid or fdisk, sfdisk and also parted it was not possible.
Please help me.

To moderator: I can't find here [CODES], sorry.

Welcome to CentOS.
New members need to read
http://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=47

You need to understand how LVM works. Your question suggests you don't.
I would start by reading the relevent on-line docs:
http://www.centos.org/docs/5/html/5.2/Cluster_Logical_Volume_Manager/

You might also be interested in the old but still useful

Thanks. I got it now. It was very simple:

firts created physical volume with
-pvcreate /dev/sdc1-
then added the physical volume to the volume group
-vgcreate VolGroup01 /dev/sdc1-
and afterwards create new partition for the new system
-lvcreate -L40435M -n newPC VolGroup01-

Thank you for quick response!
