[SOLVED] Bootup messages

Post by eddiener » 2010/06/23 22:49:30

Using CentOS 5.5 x_64 the first messages I receive upon booting are:

"Memory for crash kernel ( 0x0 to 0x0 ) not within permissible range
PCI: BIOS Bug: MCFG area at e0000000 is not E820-reserved
PCI: Not using MMCONFIG
PCI: Cannot allocate resource region 3 of device 0000:00:00.0"

Do these messages mean anything serious, to be fixed ? If so, how ?

CentOS 5.5 still boots OK but maybe fixing any of the issues above, if they are problems, would make the OS work better or faster.

That is an advisory message. Please see the FAQs.

Note: BIOS Bug. Please contact the provider and update it to the latest available version.

Do you mean the BIOS for my computer needs to be updated ?

The PCI subsystem of the running kernel has detected a bug in the hardware BIOS and is advising you of that fact.

Certainly, if I received that message on any of my systems, I would update the BIOS to the latest available version and, if necessary, report it to the manufacturer.

I am running on an MSI K9A2 platinum mobo and asked about this in their user forum.

Do the other PCI messages I reported in my OP mean anything, or are they just connected to the BIOS Bug message ?

I would take the second and third (PCI) lines to be advisory messages -- though, indeed, they are related to the mobo BIOS.

OK, I will see if anyone on the MSI forums knows what it is about. Thanks !

It turns out that this message is a bug and is bogus, so I do not have to worry about it. It occurs in RHEL 5.x+ and has been flagged as a bug which should not occur. Hopefully it will be fixed in some upcoming CentOS release so the message is no longer seen.
