updating / managing a server farm - tools?

I have a whole bunch of machines running centos 5 that I need to manage, specifically installing new versions of software that arrives in tar files (not rpms or anything so useful) on all the machines at once. I'd also like to be able to run shell commands on all the machines at once. I've seen commercial software to do this. Be grateful for any pointers to FOSS. A web interface would be nice, but not necessary. Things I've found so far are rdist, cfengine, puppet, but cfengine and puppet dont seem to provide the update features I need - please let me know if I'm wrong. Thanks!

James

Here's another one to look at:

This is a RedHat Emerging technologies thing, available for CentOS via the EPEL repo.

Very easy to install and get running.
