The correct way to do this is
yum install postgresql
No, forget a source install. For a start 8.1.3 is ancient and probably has security vulnerabilities. Did you run `yum install postgresql`? Did it work? If so then postgresql is now installed and you can just start it up. Try `service postgresql start`. The `psql` command should also be installed and that's how you can talk to the server once it's running.

Here's what you should be doing

1) Install CentOS 5.9 (5.5 is old and deprecated and contains unfixed security bugs)
2) Finish installing operating system
3) Reboot and run `yum update`
4) Run `yum install postgresql-server`
5) Run `service postgresql initdb`
6) Run `service postgresql start`
7) Done

If you find yourself downloading source files like something.tar..gz then you've gone wrong. CentOS is a package based distribution and source installs are almost always the wrong answer.

Running `yum update` should not affect an installed database instance.

Any software vendor that requires postgresql 8.1.3 needs to be taken to task for recommending use of out of date, insecure software. There was at least one postgresql bug in the last year that affected all releases that was so serious that they stopped downloads from their web site while they corrected the problem. I am fairly sure that this bug will be present in 8.1.3 so it should not be used.
