cant seem to get the gateway added right.... out of ideas.

Post by shaselai » 2010/06/10 16:46:34

I have a windows XP VM with ip 192.168.123.456 and inside that vm i am running a centos vm through vsphere with ip 192.168.456.789. Both of my VMs can ping my main comp (centos ) and my main comp can ping back. My windows can ping the VM centos BUT my VM centos can't ping back at windows.

My default gateway for centos vm is 192.168.456.1 and the gateway for XP VM is 192.168.123.2. I tried adding the gateway using:
1. route add -net 192.168.123.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 dev eth0
2. setting the gateway in centos network gui
3. setting the line in the route-eth0 in network-scripts

but when ping 192.168.456.789 i always get:

From 192.168.456.1 icmp_seq=1 Destination Host Unreachable
...

It seems the route is still 456.1 but not 123.2.

I am using the centos vm as openfire server and if my XP machine can talk to the openfire server doesn't it mean they can both communicate to reachother? If that is the case why cant i ping the windows xp machine back??? I also tried shutting down firewall and iptables but neither worked...
Can anyone point me to the right direction?

How is the network connected ? NAT,bridged?
There is a vmware-ping command.Try it.
What shows by
route -n
I'm surprised it is working at all. Running nested VMs (a VM inside another VM) is not supported by any virtualization environment I have seen.
