Yum from vault.centos.org

Post by sudoyang » 2010/05/20 20:54:34

Is it possible to use yum from the older release in vault.centos.org? Currently, some of our servers are running CentOS 5.2 but we don't want to upgrade. I tried to change the URL to this but didn't work:

[base]
name=CentOS-$releasever - Base
#mirrorlist=http://mirrorlist.centos.org/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=os
mirrorlist=http://vault.centos.org/5.2/?release=$releasever&arch=$basearch&repo=os

Try baseurl= instead of mirrorlist= . Even better is to create a local repo because the content is static, you do not need to update it once set up.

By the way, I suppose you are aware of the fact older releases have known security (some serious) issues ...

Yeah, I figured that out afterwards to use base url.

Yes, also aware of older releases potentially having more security problems. However, we tend not to upgrade since we have thousands of systems and it takes a long time for us to recertify our applications on the newer OS. We're also behind several layers of firewall. Most of our servers are not directly exposed to our customers. Only a few servers are accessible and those are usually kept up to date, but the majority of our servers don't need to be highly secured.
