Newbie trying to connect to HTTP Proxy Server

Post by Spacesurfer » 2010/05/16 03:36:21

So I'm a Linux newbie and I'm trying to set up a server for an NPO who connects to the Internet through an internal proxy (Websense). I can't access the Internet unless through the proxy.

Since it's a server I did not install a GUI so I'm wondering how to connect the new server to said proxy server. I have the IP address, port number and username-password for the proxy server. The new server has a static IP address and is ready too go!

What do I need to do?

You need to show more info. How you configured Squid (centos proxy server) , how the IPTables (firewall) configured.

I'm sorry but did you even read my post? I'm not using Squid nor do I need to do anything to my firewall. I just need to know how to connect to my companies Websense Proxy Server so this new server I set up for them can access the Internet.

As this is not any CentOS shipped package so I can not offer any idea. Some one else may suggest about this package.

Welcome to the CentOS fora. The following reading is recommended for new users:
Readme First
Installing Software
Where to Find Answers
How to provide information about your system

You do not specify what this server needs internet access for. Specific applications will normally have their own config files where you can configure proxies, for yum you can add an entry to /etc/yum.conf, and you can also set a system-wide proxy.

A quick google would have gotten you this link (a.o.):

you can use text based browser such as lynx i will explain u how to set the proxy

open configuration file using vi editor and add the http_proxy line as follows

vi /etc/lynx-site.cfg
http_proxy="http://a.b.c.d:port/"

where a.b.c.d is your proxy server ip and port is proxy port

to browse the site just type following line on command prompt

lynx www.yahoo.com
