Understandable and common. It is still not clear where you got the RPM package as you do not have a repo configured that supplies it. Please read about Installing Software, and Repositories, and note the warnings and advice about installing and configuring the yum priorities plugin.

Installing software from a known repo both helps assure higher quality and compatible packages, and can use yum to resolve and satisfy dependencies. Why did you not use the supplied vsftpd?

I think i got it from a forum i can?t remember about.

Everything on the server works except ftp. I?m hosting about 10 sites on the server with PHP and MySQL.

Can some please guide me thru how to the fix the server to work with FTP.

I don?t want to reinstall if i don?t have to.

Don't worry about mistakes as they happen all the time. So by skimming through your dmesg info .. are you are running this server within a xen virtual machine? I noticed the interace/link going up and down.

You might want to try and run an strace on the process when it is a hung state to see what is happening.

FWIW: Our version of proftpd is 1.3.2b which was built locally and install via yum.

How about
rpm -qi proftpd
or if that fails
rpm -qi $(rpm -qa | grep -i proftpd)
?

The moment you stop making mistakes you're probably dead. :-D
Everybody makes mistakes, like I missed the kernel info from dmesg, preoccupied as I was searching for ftp crashes.

My remarks were not meant as criticism, but if information appears to be contradictory, the contradiction needs to be sorted out, as troubleshooting is often a process of eliminating possible causes.

Having said that, when you lose connection, can you determine whether your server is still listening on port 21, as indicated above? If yes, you may have to research why the interfaces keep disconnecting/reconnecting, as stated by wedgeshot.

If not, you might want to consider uninstalling the proftpd package and install the one from rpmforge, or, imho preferable, install vsftpd, which is part of CentOS.

I uninstalled the ProFTPD server.

I installed the VSFTPD from YUM and installed the webminmodule.

i can connect to the server with Telnet but can?t list files.

When i try to connect with a FTP client i get the following errors:

An error occured openig that folder on the ftp server. Make sure you have access to that folder.

200 Switching to ASCII mode.
227 Entering passive mode (172,20,1,5,69,210)

Help me please.

How to i choose Users and what folders to use??

Quite correct. New question on different topic ==> New Topic.
