5.4 i386 netinstall fail?

Post by kantarjiev » 2010/02/22 20:23:31

I'm trying to re-install on a 4.6 system, using the 5.4 netinstall (the system is old enough that it won't boot from the USB DVD drive, sigh).

I get through the download, the configure, the package selection ... and get a python/sqlite error. I don't have a good way of capturing it right now or I would.

I'm rooting around in the vault to find a complete 5.2 setup to at least get the machine back in a running state.

Is this a known problem somewhere? Is there a workaround?

Thanks.

Don't see what using the ancient 5.2 is going to buy you. I'd try a very minimal install in netinstall then add packages/groups with yum.

It got me through the install process. The 5.4 netinstall was failing before the / file system was completely formatted. The 5.2 netinstall got me through package installs, and now I can "just" do "yum upgrade"...

That's going to be a lot of updates. Good luck with that, and please do follow the procedure in section 4 of the CentOS 5.4 Release Notes to avoid problems when there are updates for some critical components such as glibc.

Guess it is a case of "whatever works"; however, it would be interesting to know if there has been some regression between 5.2 and 5.4. If so it would rate a bug report.

Well, if I find myself with extra time, I'll try doing the 5.4 install again and send the stack dump.

What happened to 5.3, anyway? I was surprised to not find it in the vault.

Seems to have gotten lost in transit. Last mention I saw said it was on the way, but it seems never to have arrived. Will check on it when I get a (proverbial) "round tuit".

Edit: Our champion developer-tweaker is on the job! :-D See https://www.centos.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?post_id=100052&topic_id=24882&forum=37#forumpost100052

The 5.2 install completed. I just tried the 5.4 netinstall again and it failed in the same way, while checking dependencies after taking the root password.

I took a floppy dump of the exception - what kind of FS is that? My windoze PC doesn't like it.

Sadly, this box doesn't want to recognize my ASUS USB DVD drive at boot or during the install... even though it reads it just fine after the install. So I'm kind of stuck with netinstall (since I don't have the distro on multiple floppies). Sure would be nice to have the single-disk server install again!

Very cool about 5.3, except that it's not in the vault yet :-(

If I'm doing the netinstall anyway, is that a better base for the upgrade to 5.4?

Not midnight UTC yet, and developer time tends to run somewhat slower than real time. :-)

There should be fewer updates from 5.3 -> 5.4 than 5.2 -> 5.4 but still a lot. I'd be interested in the results from the point of view of debugging the apparent anaconda regression. Seems like this should rate a bug report. Sorry - don't know about the floppy format. If Windows doesn't like it, perhaps ext3. Would have thought it would be FAT.
